I suppose we had the same problems up here in Canada with the British vs the French but that was WAR and not directed at the general populace. Luckily British Columbia does not have a glorified history of violence, unless you are referring to recent gang activity fueled by Drugs.

bob
bobskoot: wet coast scootinAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05258612401956399482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2259595163018451877.post-45739581034489501072009-10-26T10:51:15.259-05:002009-10-26T10:51:15.259-05:00John Brown was crazy but he was an abolitionist wh...John Brown was crazy but he was an abolitionist which is what counted in the long run. Quantrill did many terrible things but in support of Biblically endorsed slavery and not under the cover of lunacy. Which makes him not only history's loser but also a murderer with his eyes wide open.
What strikes me as odd, surprising even, is that his raid is still in the public memory, and that people tossing pigskins around for fun (no less) think about their past. I can see beating up someone who wants to own another human being as property, but I can't see giving a toss one way or the other over a football game.
I love history.Conchscooterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08016331487463993200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2259595163018451877.post-51069671496711347942009-10-26T08:42:15.462-05:002009-10-26T08:42:15.462-05:00Lance,

Sometimes wonder if people ever change or forget.
My chiropractor went to Missouri, and we had an interesting discussion the other day. She was amazed that people from Kansas get so bent out of shape about Quantrill's raid. We had a good chuckle about it.
And we do generally play pretty good basketball and recently have had a bit better luck at football as well. But after getting drubbed by Oklahoma last weekend, well......
Thanks for the visit,
Jimcpa3485https://www.blogger.com/profile/00031439889267356735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2259595163018451877.post-4561993025888158532009-10-26T08:37:52.995-05:002009-10-26T08:37:52.995-05:00Jack,

I have always found it a bit interesting that he is immortalized for his efforts, even though he was as cruel as any terrorist. But you sure knew where he stood.

Re: the Kansas cheerleaders. I'll get you for that one. LOL Actually, we have a tendency to use lines like that for Kansas State University, which has a very strong agricultural background. We call it the "Udder College".

Thanks for stopping by.

JimboBobcpa3485https://www.blogger.com/profile/00031439889267356735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2259595163018451877.post-37336752232575301142009-10-25T22:28:42.953-05:002009-10-25T22:28:42.953-05:00Wow, a great historical piece Jim! Thank you for an interestin...Dear cpa3485 (Jimbo):

Thank you for an interesting historical perspective. John Brown (the abolitionist) is burried at the foot of the Olympic ski jump in Lake Placid, New York. It was the last place he owned a farm. He is buried there with the remains of 12 followers, including a son. Following his raid on Harper's Ferry, all of the bodies (except his) were sent to a local medical school for dissection. The grave site in Lake Placid is very interesting. The farmhouse is open in the summer as a museum.

It was my understanding that the Kansas cheerleaders were sent home that year to keep from grazing on the playing field.

Fondest regards,
Jack • reep • Toad
Twisted RoadsJack Riepehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07531160098262862027noreply@blogger.com
